This is the first time that New York’s Bronx Zoo has ever welcomed a baby Blue penguin. These tiny penguins are also known as “blue penguins,” “little blue penguins,” and “fairy penguins.” The rarity of the event itself makes this birth special. Moreover, this species is threatened by climate change and humans, so being able to breed more Little penguins is important.
Fun fact: Little penguins are the smallest of the world’s 18 species. Adults grow to just over a foot tall and weigh only 2 to 3 pounds.
